Anyone following the vagus nerve stimulation research?

tony_cfs
Been reading about vagus nerve stimulation for inflammatory conditions and it's actually fascinating. There's a clinical trial at a university hospital that showed VNS reduced inflammation markers in RA patients significantly. And there are some early studies looking at it for fibromyalgia and CFS too. The basic idea is that stimulating the vagus nerve triggers an anti-inflammatory response in the body. Some people are doing it with actual implanted devices but theres also research on non-invasive versions (like a little device you clip to your ear). Im not saying this is going to cure anyone. We've all been burned by "breakthroughs" before. But the mechanism actually makes sense biologically and the early data is intriguing. Anyone else nerding out about this or is it just me lol

I've been following this too! The bioelectric medicine angle is really interesting. The fact that you can modulate the immune response through nerve stimulation is kind of wild. I read about the ear clip device (gammaCore I think?). It's already FDA approved for migraine and cluster headache and some docs are using it off-label for inflammatory conditions. Might be worth asking about if your doctor is open to it.

Not just you — I nerd out about this stuff too. The vagus nerve connection to inflammation is legitimately exciting science. It's one of the few "new approaches" that has a plausible biological mechanism and not just anecdotal evidence. I've been doing deep breathing exercises that supposedly stimulate the vagus nerve and... I think it helps? Hard to tell if it's the breathing itself or the nerve stimulation but either way the cost is zero so why not.

fascinating. i had never heard of this before. the idea that the nervous system can regulate inflammation is really cool. im going to look into this more. does anyone know if the ear clip device is covered by insurance for off-label use? or is that an out of pocket thing
