POTS people — how do you stay hydrated enough

dizzy_liz
im so tired of drinking water. like genuinely. i know that sounds ridiculous but between the salt loading and the 3 liters a day minimum im supposed to hit i feel like all i do is drink and pee. drink and pee. repeat forever. and half the time it doesnt even help?? i stood up too fast this morning and saw stars for like 10 seconds. my hr went to 145 just from STANDING. what electrolyte stuff do yall use? ive tried liquid iv and its fine i guess but the sugar content bugs me. also its expensive when youre doing 2-3 packs a day. someone told me about LMNT but idk any other hydration hacks? im 22 and im tired of passing out in target lol

LMNT is worth it imo. yeah its pricey but the electrolyte content is way better than liquid iv and no sugar. i do one packet in the morning and one in the afternoon. also: get a giant water bottle with time markers on it. sounds silly but having a visual reminder of where i should be throughout the day actually helped me drink more. i have a 64oz one and i refill it twice a day.

I make my own electrolyte drink. 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp lite salt (potassium), squeeze of lemon or lime, water. Costs basically nothing. I know it's not as convenient as packets but when you're drinking 3+ servings a day the cost savings add up. Also — I found that eating salty foods throughout the day helps almost as much as drinking electrolytes. Pickles, olives, pretzels, broth. My cardiologist said "eat as much salt as you can tolerate" and I took that as a personal challenge lol

the passing out in target thing 😭 why is it always target??? my theory is the fluorescent lights + the walking + the standing still while looking at things is just the perfect storm for POTS. i literally had to sit on the floor in the candle aisle once and a worker asked if i needed an ambulance

ok so random tip but pedialyte popsicles. they sell them in the baby aisle. i know its meant for kids but theyre actually perfect for when youre nauseous and cant stomach drinking more liquid. plus in the summer when youre overheating they cool you down AND get electrolytes in. dual purpose. also yes LMNT is great. the citrus salt one actually tastes good.

Knee-high compression stockings didn't do much for me but waist-high made a noticeable difference. I know they're annoying to get on but the improvement in my symptoms was immediate enough that I just accepted it as part of my daily routine. For hydration: I set a timer on my phone. Every 30 minutes, drink. It's annoying but it works because otherwise I forget and then wonder why I feel terrible at 2pm.
